During the winter months, the landscape around this cosy holiday home looks like something out of Narnia. Just minutes away from the piste, it's the ideal place to call home during a winter sports trip, and it makes an equally great base for vacations in the summer too. 

Step inside, and you'll instantly feel at peace thanks to the tranquil interior space, filled with natural wood and soothing shades. The open-plan setup makes it fantastic for socialising after a long day in the great outdoors – curl up on the sofa with a glass of wine, or get busy making some hearty dishes in the kitchen. There's even a glazed patio, where you can gaze out at the wilderness, and your very own private sauna – do as the Finns do, and sweat out your stresses as you breathe in the calming scent of pine. 

Each morning you can be first on the slopes  – simply slip on your skis and enjoy the fresh powder cloaking the mountainside. And, when the weather is warmer, you might like to spend a day boating around one of the nearby lakes, or going on a fishing trip to catch your supper. If we were constructing a home in such an idyllic location, we would have done the same thing as the person behind this log cabin on the edge of Lake Saimaa did and put as many windows in as humanly possible. When it comes to views, there's no bad seat in the cabin, which was only built in 2020 and comes packed with modern, monochromatic furnishings. However, it's possible to get closer still to the natural beauty out through the glass doors. Here, guests can choose between sitting on the covered terrace, lounging on the pier or taking a perch around the fire pit area. It's also outside where the separate sauna outhouse is found. Powered by a wood-burning stove and using water pumped from the lake, there's also a dressing room in here and another huge window gazing out to the tranquil waters. After a morning sweat, borrow the rowboat and take a paddle around the lake. Alternatively, drive twenty-five minutes to Ruokolahden Freeski Ky and tackle the slopes.

This charming cabin is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life, as you'll be surrounded by verdant nature, allowing you to relax in peace. Snuggle up in the hanging chair with a blanket as you delve into a brand new book, watching the local wildlife through the windows.

You're only a short walk away from Kuortaneenjärvi lake, allowing you to relax every single day as you watch the glistening waters – we recommend making a homemade picnic to enjoy here as the children play on the swing set. You should at least once experience the sunset from this spot too – we promise that it'll make an amazing memory.

Thanks to the large picture windows, you can enjoy views through the trees and down to the water from almost every room. And of course, no Finnish abode would be complete without a sauna. With its magical setting on the shores of Lake Pielinen, we imagine wonderful summer days just messing about on the water. This delightful wooden cottage has its own rowing boat, as well as a grill hut with views of the lake. Later on, stargaze from the outdoor Jacuzzi with a glass of Lakka liqueur. If you tire of exploring nearby, there’s the rest of the Koli National Park to discover. What’s more, there are plenty of skiing and snowshoeing opportunities during colder months – you may even spot the Northern Lights. Watch the snow fall in the winter, or admire the light glinting through the trees in the summer months – this is a true sanctuary. When you get hungry, you can fire up the barbeque and grill up some salmon to enjoy on the terrace as you gaze out across Lake Kiltua. Your host can even arrange for a mobile hot tub, so you can enjoy an evening dip beneath the stars. And, perhaps best of all your furry friend can come along too – dogs are very welcome guests here. 

Although you could probably while away an eternity hardly moving from this serene spot, fans of the outdoors are spoilt for choice when it comes to activities. Your host can help to arrange guided hunting, fishing, and trekking trips, and also rent out the required equipment. You can also take a rowing boat out onto the lake, or visit the nearby Jyrkänkoski ironworks – it's just over half a kilometre away. And, after a long day of exploring, you can do as the Finns do and soothe your muscles with a session in your very own sauna.

In Finland, going to the sauna has been elevated to a national pastime and this home provides the perfect opportunity for you to find out why. With your own outdoor hot tub and sauna inside, it’s the ultimate destination for some peace and pampering. Interiors are minimalist with flourishes of fur blankets and a cosy wood-burner, but then you don’t need much adornment when you’ve got windows opening up to those views over Lake Haukjärvi. If you're looking for an instant way to slow down and reconnect with life outside of a screen, you've come to the right cabin. Perched on the edge of lake Aitjärvi, this house of logs is all about feeling relaxed and at one with nature. Of course, there is a TV and Wifi but we won't tell the kids if you don't. To make the most out of your stay we recommend taking your morning cuppa on the terrace while birds sing overhead, going for meandering walks in the woods and cooking all your meals on the fire pit (even though there's a perfectly good oven). In the colder months, those double-height windows are perfect for gawping at how beautiful everything looks blanketed in snow and, if you do venture out, remember there's a sauna to warm up in after. This no-frills cabin is pleasingly functional, which will no doubt appeal to anyone with kids in tow. And if that wasn't enough, the secluded location, rowing boat and endless fishing opportunities should clinch the deal.

Sparkling new and in what we think is a really special spot, this cabin has been built in the age-old style, overlooking the lake. Detached but set in a small, exclusive group of similar homes, they sit on the owner's private lakeside land and share a small sandy beach with a pier. So in the summertime, we're talking swimming, boating and fishing – all with the fabulous pine forest as a backdrop. But stay in winter for all sorts of snow sports – the ski slopes are a short drive away too.

All the traditional features are here, with a private sauna, a log burner and a loft room that's perfect for the kids, along with a terrace on the ground floor and a balcony upstairs, but there's a crisp, modern edge to everything. Perfect for active holidays, the owner can hire out bikes and kayaks and can even arrange horse riding.

Whether you've been fly fishing over the river Juutuanjoki (a seven-minute drive away), hiking the Lemmenjoki national park (a twenty-six-minute drive), or taking in the breathtaking views over the sand beach right next to your home, any day is best bookmarked with a detox by the wood-burning sauna stove. Come evening, we recommend sitting out on the terrace, sipping sundowners and watching the starry night sky twinkle overhead.

When we think of Lapland, we think of the Northern lights, lots of snow, and cute as a button wooden chalets. And this home isn't disappointing. While we can't make any promises about the aurora borealis, we can tell you that this wooden cabin is serving up some seriously homely vibes. Set near a lake - which is perfect for summertime dips - the plot is traditionally Scandinavian. Thick tree trunks have been used to create the walls, while further wood panelling separates the bedrooms. The combined living space has got an L-shaped sofa for nights snuggled in front of the fire. In summer once the snow has melted, the twenty-four hours of sunshine illuminate the lush green fells, while shorter winter days are for sleigh rides, snowmobile safaris and hunting the Northern Lights. After a day packed with outdoor adventures, soothe tired muscles in your private sauna. When it’s time for apres-ski activities (whether you’ve actually hit the slopes or not), there’s a restaurant on the ground floor that plays live music — don’t worry, the apartment is well soundproofed. Once you’re warmed up, you can head next door to the karaoke bar to belt out a tune, although it might take some Dutch (or in this case, Finnish) courage. If a cosy night in is more your style, then why not gather around the dining table for a homecooked meal before sipping a nightcap on the glazed balcony with a view of the pine trees.

Found in Vuokatti Ski Centre, this apartment is a lovely spot to return to after a day of tearing up the slopes. Not only is there a crackling fireplace in the living room next to which you can warm cold fingers, but there's also an electric sauna so you can fully embrace a Finnish tradition.

An added bonus comes in the shape of a balcony with forest views and some seating from which to enjoy this peaceful vista. You also appreciate this scenery rom the communal living space, which is full of comfy furnishings and some pretty jazzy curtains.

Interior design aside, there's a simple reason why people consider this address — the resort's slopes can be reached in a mere five minutes on foot, along with a pair of restaurants. In addition to skiing, the banks of Jäätiönlampi lake can be reached in six minutes' drive and the town of Kajaani is half an hour away.

Tall pines and a landscape of lakes and mountains surround this classic log cabin. This is the ideal home for a winter holiday with ski slopes and a mountain lift within easy walking distance, and cross-country trails from almost right outside the door. In summer there are lovely forest walks to enjoy and lake beaches just a short drive away. Inside the cabin, you will find a warm and welcoming space for your group to relax in, with a wood-burning stove for staying snug on those cooler evenings and a well-equipped kitchen for cooking a feast. There is also a private in-house sauna for soothing any tired muscles. This home is ideal for a family getaway in a beautiful part of the Finnish wilderness. 

Wild Pines

Now, this is what you call a log cabin: a striking, sturdy wooden home, made from centuries-old Kelo wood. In case you’re wondering (we were), Kelo is an old, dried-out pine tree that’s shed its bark. It’s a natural antique, unique to the arctic region. And this home has it in double-height abundance. If it wasn’t for the wood, there’d be an echo inside the vast living space, but the rough edges and super-smooth panelling combine to give this home warmth. The wood burner and customary sauna help too, of course. There’s a generous covered porch for kicking off your kit after a day on the slopes, and a ski waxing room so you can prep for the next day. All told, it’s a fabulous family space inside a great big chunk of tree, conveniently located for the ski bus. 

Silver Kelo

If you want to stay just a few steps away from Vuokatti Ski Resort, in the Sotkamo area of Finland, then this is the place for you. This cosy apartment is perfect for outdoor-loving groups of friends or families and makes a brilliant place to return to after a long day on the mountain. 

The cosy living space is the ideal spot to curl up with a cup of hot coffee as you plan the day's activities. Light up the fire and get cosy as you watch the snow from the window, or rent a projector to watch a blockbuster on the big screen. When you get hungry, whip up your favorite dishes in the sleek kitchen or head outside to the balcony and grill up some hearty fare on the barbeque. And, you can round off each day with a sweaty session in the sauna – it is the Finnish way, after all. 

Skiiers and snowboarders can be on the slope within five minutes, and there are plenty of runs for thrill-seekers of all stages. In the warmer months, you can use this home as a base for hiking and cycling through the magical landscapes. This region is well known for its fishing, and those keen to catch their own dinner will be delighted by the prospects available here.
