Sat in an eye-wateringly huge 450-acre estate, this place has impressive features by the boatload. Located in the middle of the Burgundy countryside, there's been a building on this site for around two centuries, something you might be able to tell from the wooden beams, flagstone flooring and thick stone walls. However, it's no longer a humble barn, but a luxurious French getaway.

In the intervening two hundred years, plenty has been added to aid in this transformation. Outside, the most notable change has been the building of a heated swimming pool in the middle of the lush grounds and even more recently — in 2021, in fact — a walled garden has been constructed holding over twenty types of herbs and soft fruits. You're a thirty-two-minute drive from Avignon, forty minutes from Gordes, and only twenty-five minutes by car from the Grotte de Thouzon caves, just to name a few. 

The French Garden

Overlooking the Loire river and sitting in the heart of Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Natural Park, this home's spot on the map is perfect for those in thrall to the French countryside and the large plant-filled garden – almost as large as the house itself – gives you plenty of space and seating to bask in this picturesque scenery.

There's something equally charming about the home's interior, with a range of design influences on display, from rustic wooden ceiling beams and the period fireplace to bursts of bold floral wallpaper and mid-century-inspired furnishings. Given the small guest count, the kitchen is perhaps more generously sized than you might have anticipated and finished off with pretty tiles, too.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the bucolic region, there are ample wine estates and castles to discover, as well as two characterful towns that are easily reached by car. The nearest, Saumur, is the French capital of horses with exhibits and equestrian shows to catch, while Angers is slightly further away and is renowned for its medieval architecture and cultural institutions.

Lifeblood of the Valley

So constant is this home’s beauty, you can visit summer or winter and be bowled over by the views on offer from the balcony. In winter, when the Vosges Massif is capped in white and the snow lies in wait at the La Bresse-Hohneck ski resort, you can wrap up warm and enjoy a steaming cup of cacao as you gaze out over the blanketed town below. And it’s even more beautiful at sunset, when the orange glow of lights bathes it all in a fairytale glow. Although some of the winter wonderland atmosphere might evaporate as the warmer weather starts to melt the snow, the vibrant green beauty it leaves in its wake is still a sight to behold. 

When you’re not dining alfresco simply to get another look at that view, you can cosy up in the small living room to spend family movie night together, or opt for a bit of quiet time as you get in bed early with a good romance novel. 

With a free shuttle to and from La Bresse-Hohneck, you can get on the piste as early as you’d like and practice on the slopes until your limbs are in need of a hot shower. After, when you’ve sufficiently warmed up, you can have a après-ski drink on the balcony before switching on the fondue machine for a night of cheesy goodness around the dining table. 

Town centre is only a ten minute walk away, so it’s easy to stock up on whatever you need at the bakery, pharmacy, and shop.

And when you’re inspired to learn more about the region's rich history, make your way to the narrow cobbled streets and medieval gates of the town centre. You’ll find Cathédrale Saint-Pierre and the colourful half-timbered houses are just a short drive away. There are also lovely local restaurants and bars, as well as vibrant markets within easy reach – perfect for stocking up on fresh produce and French delicacies. And after a day full of fresh sea air, this home welcomes you to relax and enjoy its calm simplicity.

Open the doors from the living room and you’ll find the garden welcoming you to savour refreshing drinks and nourishing meals around the table. And when the weather draws you back inside, the living room provides a laid-back setting for sharing stories, reading and cosy movie nights. 

Maison Clémente 

Gorgeously restored with consideration and keen eye for detail, this converted farmhouse offers the best of both archetypal rural France and chic modernity.
